The Surplus Lands Commission is hearing at lyaikobe, the Maoris' claim for eompensatio.n for the Puketi State forest which was ineluded in 7224 acres acquired by the Crown in 1859 for £240. The timber in the forest is now estimated to. be worth several millions. The Maoris eont.end tlfat the lana was so.ld to the Crown but not the ! forest.
