NEW ZEALAND'S INTEREST IN ANTARCTIC LAGGING
WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. With an .Australian scientitic expedition leaving in a fortnight to establish stations- at two points in Antarctica, with another big American force going south and with 17 whaling expeditions already scheduled, _ scientitic interest in New Zealand has once more turned to tlie part the Dominion might plajr in the southern continent. Last December the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, said the dispateh of a New Zealand expedition to establish a permanent scientitic base in the Ross Dependency, would be deeided when the departmental eommittee investigating the matter had submitted its report. No report from the investigating eommittee has been published and inquiries at.the Prime Minister 's Departmeiit today revealed that there were ' ' no ngw developments to report". As far ,as could be ascertaiired, thp only direct relation between New Zealapd .and the Antarctic this- season will be the presence of a young New Zealand chemist- o£ the Department of Scientitic and Industrial Researeh, Mr. B. Y. Marsh, who will leave London ,on the whaling researeh ship BaTaena which will carry out scientiftc researeh for tlirep or four months and then return to Britain.
