BOROUGH ADMINISTRATION
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, when the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. R. R. Lind) presided over Crs. J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, E. Perry, C. G. Wishart and H. L. Norris. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) and Cr. W. C. Higgie. A letter was received from the secretary of the Shannon Cricket Club, asking for the council's assistance in putting the domain in order for the forthcoming cricket season. The situation was fully discussed and it was resolved that the reserves committee have power to spend up to £5 on the grounds. On the suggestion of Cr. Aitchison it was decided to ask representatives from the cricket and f.ootball clubs, and marching teams, to meet a committee set up by the council and discuss the future upkeep of the domain. Crs. Aitchison, Roach and Perry were appointed to represent the council. A letter from the Department of .Labour in regard to improvements to a borough dwelling was referred to the building committee for a report. The Manawatu County Council advised that the charge, for the hire of, a grader to grade the borough streets would be 9s 8d per hour, plus 12 £ Per cent. on wages to cover holiday pay. Following a discussion it was decided, on the motion of Cr. Aitchison, that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman of the works committee, with power to act after he had ascertained the cost of travelling time. A question of long standing, that of the water supply in Sheehen Street, came before the council once again when an offer from a local business firm to undertake the lifting, cleaning and replaeing of the main in that street was received. The price quoted was 11s per hour for three men, and, on the motion of Cr. Roach, this offer was accepted. The borough foreman will carry out the supervision of the work. A letter was received from the telegraph engineer advising that the Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department was j considering the question of his I department providing a radioj teieplione servicq, for mobile units of public and private utility organisations on a rental basis in urban areas where the demand existed. I The following building permits, which have the authority of the Building Controller, were approved by the council: Mr. A. August, a shed; Shannon Dairy Company, iadditions; Utility Posts, additions. j The town clerk reported that a j further supply of sanitary drums i had been purchased from Wellington. ' vf.r. !
