WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

SHANNON'S MONTHLT MEETING Twenty-five members were presen't at Laurvig's Hall for the September meeting of the Shannon Women's Institute, at which Mrs. W. Easton presided. A cordial welcome was extended to Mrs. Algie, a member of the Manawatu Federatlon, and Mrs. J. Penketh, of Palmerston North, the institutes' hospital visitor. Mrs. V. J. Bateman was proposed- as a new member. A pleasing report was given of sick members, and it was stated that both Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Griffiths were home again after spending some time in hospital. It was mentioned that Miss Alene Martin was in the Palmerston North Hospital,' and she would be pleased to receive letters. In the matter concerning the tea urn a proposal was put to the meeting that it be not lent to anyone; this was seconded and carried. Mrs. B. Hateley was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her gift of three cups and saucers as a prize for the competition in connection with the f ortheoming Paddy's market. It was reported that everything was progressing favourably for the rose show and schedules will be posted out in the near future. _ Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames J. A. Easton, M. Parr and B. Hateley, and while this was being enjoyed many members answered the roll call. Recipients of buttonholes for September birthdays were Mes.dames M. Easton and I. Martin. The motto was given by Mrs. Algie, who was presented with a buttonhole before speaking to the meeting. She congratulated members on the enjoyable meeting and stated that she* was supposed to be a mother to the Shannon and Tiritea Institutes, these two having been allocated to her as a member of the Manawatu Federation. Mrs. Algie concluded her remarks by saying that if at any time institute members required any information she would be only too pleased to do all in her power to help. Mrs. Penketh gave members an insight into her activities in connection with being the official visitor to hospitals in Palmerston North on behalf of the institutes. Qne felt convinced after listening to her that she was the right person in the right place. She made a plea that the institute should notify her of any member in hospital, as she counted it a privilege to be called upon to render service and she was ever ready. A presentation for sick folk was made to Mrs. Penketh of small pots of jam i and eggs. I Jug covers were lianded our to i members to crochet round for Uie I Paddy's market. The rollihg penny j competition was won by Mrs. Hate- ! ley. The. monthly competitions i were held and resulted as fol- ' lows:— Single bloom: Mesdames A. Richards and K. Thomson (equal) 1, Mesdames Veale and Thorne (equal) 2, Miss Joan Radford 3. Cluster: Mrs. A. Richards 1, Mrs. E. Thorne 2, Mrs. C. Veale 3. Shrub: Mesdames Thorne and Veale (equal) 1, Miss Radford and Mrs. R. Roberts (equal) 2, Mrs. J. A. Easton 3. Coat-hanger: Mrs. M. Easton 1, Mrs. S. Pedersen 2.
