Engiae .trouble forced the Tasman Empire Airways flyingboat Tasman to return to Sydney yesterday afternoon after covering more than 300 miles of the flight to Auckland. The plane was carrying 28 passengers. Concern at the shortage of clothing for secondary school children was expressed at a meeting of the Auckland Grammar School Board of Governors. It was explained that navy blue fiannel shirts were particularly hard to obtain and the stage had been reached when clothing could not be passed on from an elder member of a family to a younger. The gannents were worn out. Manufacturers contended that the margin of profit allowed on fiannel shirts by the Price Tribunal did not warrant their making them. The board decided to point out to the jVtinister of Supply the serious shortage of clothing and ask- for a reason for the position. •-

Glimpse of Mercury The planet Mercury, the closest planet to the sun, will he visible during the next two weeks, said the Director of the Carter Observatory, Mr. I. L. Thomsen. This planet, beeause of its proximity to the sun, is usually difficult to observe. It will be visible from Wellington in a direction a little south of west very hear the horizon, toward the end of twilight e'ach evening. The planet will become increasingly better placed in the next few days until October 13. Then it will be at its greatest angular distanee from the sun. On October 16 it- shouid be easily identified as it will appear as a bright starlike object about five degrees to the left of the two-da,y-old moon. A faint star will be seen below the moon and Mercury forming the j trip.p.gle.
