GROUP RALLY
HORO WHENUA WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
The eleventh annual rally of the Horowhenua Group' of Women's Institutes (eomprising Manakau, Kimberley, Levin, Ihakara, Lindsay, Poroutawhao and Waitarere Institutes) was held recently in the Ihakara Hall, Levin. There was a very good attendance. Mrs. R. Butt, president of Ihakara W.I. (the hostess institute for the day), was in the chair and extended a cordial welcome to Mesdames Grant and Gardiner of the Southem Wellington Federation Executive and to all members and visitors present. Excellent entries were received for the competitions which Ihakara Hall, Lepin. There was a Levin, and her awards were as follow: — Aprons: Mrs. R. Evans (Kimberley) 1, Mrs. R. J. Rolston (Ihakara) 2, and Mrs. Aldridge (Waitarere) 3. Scones: Mrs. Butt 1, Mrs. R. J. Rolston 2 and Mrs. R. Evans 3. Mrs. Evans was congratulated on winning first place for her apron and third place for scones and presented with a prize as well as with the shieid for her institute. Mrs. Butt was also congratulated on securing first place for her scones and presented with a prize. Miss Selbie, Levin, was the winner of a dinner competition. • The, guest artistes for the day were two outstanding entertainers, Mrs. Anderson of Lower Hutt, and Mrs. Delicate of Plimmerton, and a .youthful singer with a very beautiful voice, Miss Cynthia Lawson, of Petone. All responded most generously to the many encores called for. Other very enjoyable contributions to the programme were elocutionary items by little Jacequeline Murphy (Plimmerton) vocal duets by Mesdames Devine and Fletcher, violin solos by Mrs Powell, and a humorous sketch by Mesdames Bowater and Butt. Mesdames Maelean, Tait and Powel offieiated as aceompanistes. Mrs Butt thanked the judge and performers and presented them al iwith beautiful flowers.
A display of needlework and beautiful antiques belonging to Ihakara Institute members was the source of much interest and admiration. Votes of thanks by acclamation were accorded to Ihakara members for their very generous hospitality during the day, to the chairwoman and to the convener (Mrs. Powell) . A spirited community sing, with Mrs. Tait at the piano, added much to the enjoyment of the proceedings. The singing of the National Anthem concluded one of the most suecessful rallies held by the Horowhenua Group.
