WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. Oil company representatives and the Oil Fuel Controller were satisfied that che volunt-aty scheme had every chanee of succeeding if petrol users were conseiously aware of the need t'pT every motorist to make a sacriiice, said Mr. F. P. Walsh, chairman of the Wellington executive of the Aid for Britain campaign today, after the executive had met the general managers of the hve oil conipanies, to discuss detftiled plans for saving dollars through a /oluntary reduction of petrol CQnsumption. The Oil Fuel Controller also attended. Mr. Walsh said the alternative would be rationing with all its eumbersome procedure and unproduetive use pi labour. Dollars had to be savqd on petrol in some way and the sooner motorists realised this the hetter. Suggestions for saving petrol discussed by tlie committee inclhded the reduction of speed, avoidance of unnecessary running, tlie carryipg of fuii car loads whenever practicable,' the use of trams, trains qnd .other public traneport especially in travelling to work, the switcliing off of engines on s.tationary vehicles and appeaL thrpugh Chambers of Commerce and similar bodies to members to make a speeific reduction. A funther suggestion whieh is to be examined is for motorists tq sign an undertalring to reduce eonsumption in return for which a windshield sticker ' would be issued. Mr. Walsh expressed the committee '3 pleasure at the oil eompanies' cooperative attitude. - The executive also met representabives of major tobacco manufacturing jompanies and' workers in the tpbacpo ndustry t'his morning when further progress was made in devising means to, :-eduGe dollar expenditure on tobacco.
