UNIVERSITY'S PLANS FOR GOLDEN JUBILEE

WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. The Victoria University College will celebrate its golden jubilee in February and March, 1949, and the principal, Sir Thomas Hunter, stated today that the committee arranging the celebrations is plan.ning an intensive appeal to former students and the public for funds to build suitable hostels for men and women to sepve- as a practical memorial to the jubilee. Before the war the average number of students each year was about 1000. This year there are over 2000, and it was unlikely that the figure would ever fall below that. The immediate result had been overcrowding in the college itself and serious problems facing the students regarding accommodation and attending classes. This year there are 540 students from beyond Wellington. The only college hostel was Weir House, accommodating 88 students-, and it is considered essential for the welfare of students and to enable them to take a fuller part in the life of the college that additional' hostels be provided. Though the major difficulty was the shortage of building material, it was hoped that in eighteen months' time the position may have eased sufficiently for a start with construction tobe made.
