SHEEP COMMISSION STARTS ITS WORK

WELLINGTON, Sept. 10. The declining fertility and deterioration of the hill and high c'ountry, was the problem to which a solution must be found if the sheej) industry was to be saved from regression, said a statement from the Department of Agriculture presented- to the first sitting of the Royal Commission on the sheep industry today. Submissions from State departments and from Eederated Earmers in association with the New Zealand Wool Board and New Zealand: Meat Produeers5 Board, shared th^ opinion that deterioration in the hill and high cpiintry was a major problem fof the commission and that the economic balanee between the. hill and high country and the flat land sections of the industry must be preserved. The sitting today was held to hear submissions on procedure. The chairmjn, Mr. R. H. White (Otane) prosided. The full 'commission was present eomprising Messrs. White, R. Eddy, M.L.G. (Wellington), L. C. Gardiner (Waiau), W. E. Metealfe (Te Araroa). W. A. Scaiffe (Wanaka) and H. W. Youren (Napier). The Commfssion went into committee after hearing submissions and it was announced that the Commission wili sit in Wellington from November 19 until December 11 for the presentation of evidence of a national character. From January 12,. 1948, it will' hold sittings in various sections of the country. *
