SPEEDING UP DELIVERY OF FERTILISER

WELLINGTON, Sept. 9' Recommendations to be inade to the Government by tlie permanent Aid for Britain committee arising from a meeting yesterday include several aimed at speeding the delivery of fertiliser to farmers. The committee 's recommendations cover a request to the Minister of Labour, Mr. McLagan, to take immediate steps to encourage labour to the fertiliser works. The Minister of Transport, Mr. 0'Brien, -is to be" asked to modify transport restrictions. during the present emergency. The qu'estion of the price increase following the removal of fertiliser subsidies has yet to be finalised but it has been pointed out to the committee that any such increase would be met by increased payments for produce. The committee states that it appears likely that the average delivery rate will be 60,000 tons per month with a possible maximum of 70,000 this month and figures submitted to the committee indicate that the stock position of manufactured fertiliser is better at present than for some time past. It was reported to the committee that shearers were prepared to work hours in excess of the award and fertiliser workers in Canterbury and elsewhere were working overtime four nights weekly.
