SLOW RECOVERY IN FAR EAST
LONDON, Sept. 7. The Minister of Defence (Mr. A. V. Alexander), welcoming delegates to thh Institute of Pacific Relations Confer ence, said in many respects recovery in the Far East moved more slowh than had been hoped. Possibly Furopeans had not fnlly appreciated tne destruetion and dislocation that th war had brought to countries bordering the Pacific and had not fully gaugen the force and character of the popula. nationalist trends that had emerged The British people, though sorelx vexed, maintained their traditions interest in the .development of Pacifi countries. hroye than 100 delegates from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, China France' and the United States with ob servei's from Burina, India, Korea Siam and South Africa are attendinj the conference. Russia did not aceepl Ihe invitation. The conference will sit in private until September 20.
