Letters of resignations from marinc. engineers, giving a month's notice, arc pouring into head offices of Australian shipping companies from all ports and a complete stoppage of shipping seem,-. inevitalile. The engineers are obeying the instructions of their union which is iigliting a bitter battle with the seamen's and other maritime unions ovei a dispute which is live months old. A lireman was dismissed from the ship Oorio last Marcli. When he rejoined the ship following instruction. from the Maritime Industrv Commis sion, four engineers refused to sai. with him. They were eventually ex cluded from the industry by tlie eom mission. Heated elashes witliin the commission and attempts I»y the Engineers Union to have the men reinstated havt followed. The seamen want the origina: fireman to go back to the Corio when she reconimissions. The engineers want their men reinstated, but refuse to let them work with the lireman. iMeanwhile the shipping companies and Connnonwealth Government witl: its fieet of Australian built freighters. are standing by watching the rapid spread of the inter-union dispute whicl: will immobilise all coastal trade within a mouth if a settlement is not reached
