HOROWHENUA BADLY BEATEN

"Mark")

SATURBAY'S REP. RUGBY SEEN IN RETKGSPrCT

(By

It must be admitted tliat the; Horowhenua seniors were badly Deaten by the Wellington fifteen m Saturday. The. local team enissed their good hooker, McCashin. Gray did a good job, but was not goodNenough to beat the Kiwi, Ingpen. V/hen the ball did came through to the half, Gordon Sciascia, it was too slow, with the result that the opposing breakaways were* around the scrum. They gave the half a rough* time and turned what would have been an attacking movement into--defence. The Wellington backs, smartly fed by Goldstone, were faster than the Horowhenua rearguard, and their handling was perfect. "The way Scott, the Wellington fullback, joined the backs in the passing movements was something seldom seen locally. The overlap certainly brought results, and these tactics were too much for the Horowhenua defence. It was no fault of the Horowhenua forwards that they were beaten on Saturday. They are as: good a pack as this. district has had for many years. Ramsbotham has been playing outstanding football this year, and the Maori team must • have a great pack of forwards if they are all better than him. Altho'ugh Wellington 1 played rougher football, Horowhenua showed that they can hand it out if they have to, and Wellington had had enough in the final stages. In the backs Hakaraia, Galloway, Hudson and Gordon Sciascia all played well, though Galloway was doing more than his share of the work. Geoff. Sciascia t^ckled his man hard, but he is not accustomed to playing on the wing. The rest of the backs did • not measure up and must be causing the selector some worry. For the fullback position he has Skilton. De Gastro and Jacobs to choose from. It is hoped that Evans will be fit to play ] on the wing next Saturday.
