RENT FOR FARM HOUSES
WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. In negoti&tions now being conducted between the New Zealand Workers' Union and Federated Farmers, the question of the rent of preniises occupied by » employees^l on sheep and agrieultural farms, was being discussed, Mr. A. McLagan, Minister of Labour, told Mr. Ormond Wilson in a written reply to a question which he asked in Parliament last week. Mr. Wilson had stated that whilst the usual practice was to supply such workers with frfre accommodation, the shortage of houses in New Zealand at present has been responsible for some few farmers taking advantage of the positi'on and charging rent. This, he alleged, in effect reduced the actual wage paid. Mr. McLagan added: "To the be&t of my knowledge the New Zealand Workers' Union has at all times fulTy watched the interests of its members and is able and* willing to carry out all work necessary to their interests."
