PATRICK GOES TO HOSPITAL
SYDNEY, Sept. 2. Knocked out for the first time in his career in the fight with the American negro, Freddie Dawson, at Sydney Stadium last night, Vic Patriek, the Australian lightweight ehampion, is , in hospital. Doctors report that his condition is not serious. They are treating him for concussion, a badly cut left eye, and cuts about the face. Patriek was badly liurt and had to ceceive mcdical attention for five minutes before the police and his seconds earried him from tbe ring. After consultation, the doctors decided to admit him to hospital. By that time a great crowd of supporters, who came from the stadium, surged outside the hospital and fans were stiil arriving by taxi, private cars, and o'n foot. A crowd of over 14,000 saw the fight, ifor wliich each boxer will receive about £2000. Some eorrespondeuts are suggesting that this will be Patriek 's last fight. Aged 27, Patriek has had 51 fights, of wliich he has won 42 by knockouts. Dawson said that he fought 10 rounds under the imprSssion that the fight was a 15-round one instead of 12. His object was to wear Patriek down and to win in the last few rounds. ' ' Patriek 's punches are as- liard as any lightweight in the States," said Dawson. "I am toki he is not as good as he was 18 months ago. I cannot comiuent on that, but I know the puncli that he knocked me through the ropes with in the 11th round was the hardest I have been hit with." Dawson took the 'first three rounds, Ihe fourth, fiftli and sixth favoured Patriek, the seventh went to Dawson, the eighth was even though Patriek 's -eye was bleeding, and -Dawson shaded Patriek in tlie next two. I11 the llt.h round. Patriek, though totteriug, brolte through and knocked Dawson through the ropes for the count of six with a left to the chin. Two rights by Dawson early in the 12th dropped Patriek. He rosQ at eight, but went down again under another right to the face.
