PLANES CRASH IN AIR RACE
Received Tuesdav, 7 p.m. NEW 'YORK, Sept. 2. Four planes crashed yesterday in the Thompson ti'ophv race at the national inir races. One pilot was killed, two parachuted to safetv and the fourtit crashlanded successfully. Cook Cleland, of Cleveland, Ohio, woil the race with an average speed of 39(5.1 milcs liourly for the 300 miles around a rectangular ..course of 15 miies. Clelandr who set a new world 1 reeord for official, closed couj's,G,.r,pici^g; ! won 1S,000 . dollars.. The previous reeord of 384 milcs hourly was set the previous day iu a special race foi Mustangs. r- • ?V
