SOUTHERLY GALE STRIKES WELLINGTON
WELLINGTON, Aug. 2. Extremely boisterous -weather ushered in tlie first spring, montli in Wellington. Gales lashed seas around Cook Strait, sending many ships to shelter. The collier Poolta had to put back to Worser Bay this morning, the Gale is sheltering off Long Island, the Avon is sheltering off the northern coast of Nelson and the Gael also had to seek shelter in the northern part of the South Island. j During the height of yesterday 's | northwesterly gale gusts of wind 1 reached 69 miles an hour. At Rongotai ! the maximum gust was 79 m.p.h. In the early hours of this morning a \ cold front passed over Wellington from the south. The ivind changed at 3.30 | a.m. from northwest to soutbeast, and j with, the change came heavy rain and a drop in temperature of 10 degrees. 1 At 9.30 a.m. the s'outherly was inereasing in foree with gusts up to 43 miles at Kelburn and 58 at Rongotai. ■
