NATIONAL PARTY CHOICE FOR MT. ALBERT
AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. The selection of Mr. C. J. Garland, of Auckland, as the National Party candidate for the by-election to fill the Mt. Alhert seat made vacant by the death of Mr. A. S. Richards, was made at a meeting of party delegates. » A son of the Rev. C. H. Garland} formerly of the Pitt Street Methodist Church, Mr. Garland, who is a solicitor, was born in New Flymouth 48 years ago. He won the New Zealand championship debating medal, later leading the Auckland team against a touring debating team representing Oxford University. An Auckland hockey representative and founder of the Thames Valley JLawn Tennis Association, Mr. Garland was a member of the Thames Borough Council hefore coming to Auckland. He is a former member of the Auckland City Council, Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board arfd Auckland University Coliege Council.
