FIRE AT HEADQUARTERS OF N.Z.E.F. IN JAPAN

TOKIO, Bept. lv Damage estimated fit £1000 was caused today by a fire which raged for two hours aiid destroyed the buildings and equipment at the headquarters ot the Second N.Z.E.F. at Chofu. The big Kobe steelworks, the company's fourth largest in Japan, was threatened by the fire but the major portion of the miii was saved after the destruction of one building containing machinery. The biggest loss in army equipment was the Y.M.C.A. bulk stores containing £300 worth of canteen goods and furniture. The garrison workshop was also destroyed. ^ An eyewitness said the fire started in the garrison workshop and spread after an explosion. Fire-fighting troops saved thousands of pounds worth of stores.
