ATOMIC RADIATION AND HEREDITY

Received Monday, 7 p.m. WASHINGTON, August 31. The United States Atomic Energy Commission today announced plans for a long range study of the effect of atomic radiation on heredity among the offspring of survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bomhings. The study will he made jointly hy the Commission and National Rev search Council. The researchers will try to discover the effect of atomic radiation on the hlood cells, on the physical growth of children, on the mechanisms of heredity and -development of different pathological conditions. Dr. Lewis Weed, chairman of the council 's division of medical sciences, said today there had heen erroneous statements about the frequency of abnormalities among newly born children in Hiroshima and Nagasaki hut at present there was no reliable information to that effect.
