MARKETING COMMISSION STARTS ITS WORK

WELLINGTON, August 2 V. The newly . constituted Dairy Products Marketing Commission has gOL quickly down to business. Its ehairman, Mr.1 W.^ Marshall, announced tunight when it ended its iirst meeting after two days' deliberations, that tbe Commission had "taken up -the matter of negotiations with the United Kmgdom in respect of the sale of butter and cheese for the 1917-4:8 season. Mr. Marshall said further thaf the Commission had agreed witn the arrangements made for the London discussions and had received a report from the New Zealand delegation in London. The Commission ;s views were being communicated to the delegation witb whom the Commission was maintaining close contact. ' ' The Commission will proceed with. its various functions and responsibilities in aceordance with the provisions of tlie act, as early as possible, inciuding tbe question of an additional payment for last season and the fixing of the price for the current season," said Mr. Marshall. The Commission had appointed Mr. G. Pottinger, at present Acting Director of Export Marketing, to be the generalmanager of the Commission subject to the consent of the Public Service Commission. He would, for the time being, oecupy both posit-ions. Mr. J?". Lingard M. Com. (Hons.), B^A., a qualilied accountant, at present secretary of the Economic Stabilisation Commission, was appointed secretary subject to tlie Public Service Commissiou 's . consent. It was expeeted thdt witliin a fevv weelcs Mr. Lingar'd would be wholly an officer of the Commission as the Commission must function forthwith. Consideration of ways and means to enabld it to do so occupied a good deai of the first meeting. It was decided, subject to the consent of the Minister of Marketing, that until other ari'angeuients eould be made, the Marketing Department be appointed agent of tlie Commission for the purchase and saie of butter and cheese intended for export aud to regulate and control tlie distribution of butter and cheese m New Zealand. Mr. Marshall said regular meetings of the Commission would be held on the first Tliursday of . eacli montli. It would nieet next week. Members of the Commisison, in addition to Mr. Marshall, are Messrs B. C. Asliwin, F. P. Walsli, C. Morgan Wiliiams, A. E. C'andy, II. E. Blyde and W. G. Macartney.
