BIG DEMAND FOR TELEPHONES
one application received per day With the ever-increasing, demands for telephone connections, the Post and- Telegraph Department was faced with a difficult problem, stated the postmaster, Mr. l. A. Whitham today. "Appiications for service are averaging over one per day, ahd "with uiidefgfound cable in short supply these applications can only be -satisfied by conhections to existing party lines." It was pot generally rea'lised that it was impossible to connect'all teiephohes by over head lines all the way from the subscriber to the exchange, said Mr. Whitham, The usual practice was to run underground cables from the exchange, which terminated in "pole bOxes." From these the wires were run overhead to the sUbsCriber's premises. "Equipment manufactured overseas is still being dispatched to devastated areas of Europe and elsewhere and the prospects of obtaining supplies of underground cable in New Zealand for' at least 18 months are remote," he stated. In the circumstances the department was compelled to connect applicants to existing lines.
