Farm Machinery Film For screening under the auspices of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand, a film has been secured by Mr. Bob Young, of Levin, depicting 100 years of Massey Harris progres's in farm machinery. Entirely in technicolour, the film should have a wide appeal, and all interested persons are invited to the Century Hall tomorrow evening at 8 p.m. There will be no charge for admission. Illegal Use of Cement Pleading guilty to charges of using cement for the construction of footpaths contrary to the regulations, Lionef E. Lyons and Bertie E. Bartlett were each fined £15 by Mr. Miller, S.M., in the Magistrates' Court, Napier. • Mr. H. C. Spfonle, Who appeared for the Cohtrbller, said that Lyons had constructed 10 feet of path, and had gone on to cdnstruct a further 10 feet after being advised to discontinue by the inspection officef. J-Force Meri Eeavmg The Australian ship Kanimbla is expected to arrive at Auckland today and will -leave for Japan to morrow. At Auckland she will embark approximately 200 J-Force personhel. This party includes troops returnihg to Japan after special leave and also a small supplementary relief draft. The troops, who are at present in camp at Papakura, will embark tomorrow afternoon and the ship will leave immediately afterwards. Home Service Conference Sitting right through Sunday till 2.30 a.m. yesterday, the annual conference of the New Zealand Home Servicemen's Association dealt with a large numoer of remits, the most important dealing with pensions, housing, rehabilitaton, defence and immigration. The conference decided to support any action taken toward imp^oving the defence operations. In addition, support was given to the principle of compulsory military training. Plaries for Patrol Work To be used for forestry patrols and army liaison work, six Auster light aircraft, are to be bought by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The Chief of Air Staff , Air ViceMarshal A. de T. Nevill, said that the machines would be used for the type of work performed by air observation post squadrons as well as for forestry work. At present the air force used Tiger Moth and Harvards for their forestry patrols in the North Island. Identity of Dead Man The identity of the elder ly drover who died last week at the Hastings Memorial Hospital, has been definitely established. His name was Tui Armstrong and he was known mainly in the Gisborne district. He had no relatives. His death occurred after he had been given accommodation at a station property where he was found seriously ill in the morning. While a hospital patient he did not reveal his identity. Armstrong was ,a wandering drover and was in Gisborne for five to ten years, trading in horses. He had contracted with a stock firm to trap wild ponies at Galatea station. Miss New Zealaiid Qufest An extension of the closing date of the Miss New Zealand quest from September 2 to October 11 has been announced by Mr. G.. C. Sherwood, chairman of the board of directors which is cohducting the quest for the Food for Britain fund of the Royal Society, of St. George. This decision had been made to meet the requests • of the Mayors of Nelson, Blenheim and Gisborne, and officials of many organisations in other towns who were eager to support the quest, said Mr. Sherwood. The recbnt intehsificatfon of Britain's financial and food crisis had brought about an increased interest in the society's campaign.

High August Heat The temperature in Wellington early yesterday afterhoon reached 65.3 degrees. This is the highest figure for August since 1909, states the Kelburn weather office. On August 28 of that year the temperature reached 66 degrees. The* temperature in Levin yesterday reached 61 degrees in the shade. Sum of £11£ Stolen It was learned yesterday that the thieves who broke into the Scotch Wool Shop in Coleman Place, Palmerston North, over the weekend stole approximately' £116 in money, some of which had been concealed in the shop and some in the office portion of the premises. Entry was effected by forcing the front door with a jemmy. Thq door Was found open by Constable Robertson while he was on duty in Coleman Place at about 9 p.m. on Sunday. Owing to the absence of the manager of the shop from the city at the weekend some delay was caused in ascertaining the full extent of the theft. Police inquiries are proceeding. Cars in Collision As a result of ,a collision between two cars at the intersectioh of Union Street and the main Palmerston North- Wellington highway,. at Foxton, the driver and four passengers, including a young child, were pinned in one of the vehicles, which had overturned ahd come to rest on its back. The accident occurred at about 2 p.m. on Sunday. Mr. Turner, raiiway cierk, of Ashburton, was the driver of the car which turned over, and the other car was driven by Mr. Cameron, of Palmerston NOrth. The impfisoned passengers were eXtricated after assistance had iarrived. Three of them received minor injuries.
