some Improvements seen Though there had been a marked improvement in the conduct. of , motorists on the road since the campaign began, it was evident that a large number of pedestrians were not pulling their weight, said a member of the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce's road safety campagn committee today. Situated as it is on a main highway, Levin's shojbping area was particularly dangerous, and the need for more care in crossing the street should be apparent to all. Many people still persisted in jaywalking, sometimes under the very shadow of the safety flag. The fiag has been lowered once since . the campaign began, indicating a fatality in the district. He hoped that the road users of this district. He hoped that the road users of this district would ensure that it was not lowered again during thb period of the campaign. A representative of an insurancfe company said today that a favourable reaction to the Chamber of Commerce's safety drive was beicoming apparent. The number of claims - in regard to damaged vehicles received by the company 'since the campaign began had jshown a marked decrease. j " An experienced motorist, interviewed this morning, was of the opinion that though the Junior Chamber's drive was very commendable, the results it achieved would be of only a temporary nature. What was needed, he contended, was an intensification of rdad control by the Traffic Department and heavier fines for offenders. Substantial fines should also be imposed on all pedestrians caugnt jay-walking.
