WELLINGTON, Augnst 22. Motorists and smokers are botli on their honour to reduc-e their consumption of petrol and tobacco respectively by one-tentb. This was virtualiy imposed upon them at the linal session of the Aid to Britain conference. In the case of motorists the honour system is backed by a big stick — proposed reduced Government qnota — which has not yet been suggested for smokers. The conference lirst passed the following recommendation: (a) That the Government reduce by 10 per cent. New Zealand's monthly petrol quota. (h) That in view of the additional and unproductive work involved in the coupon and licence system, it is desirable that this be avoided if possible. (c) Tbat a voluntary system be tried and that if this fails coupon rationing be instituted. (d) That the cooperation of the whole community he sought in an endeavour to obtain the result without the necessity f.or coupons. The conference later recommended: Tliax the question of dollar savings on tobacco be refcrred for examination to a permanent committee which the conference recommends the Government to set up.
