RECORD PRICE FOR HORSE
Received Wednesday, 9.45 p.m. SYDNEY, August 20. Australia 's premier raceliorse Shannon was sold this at'ternoon for £27,300 which is £8300 more than t.lie previous record Australian priee paid for Talking. The buyer is Mr. W. J. Sniith, head of Australian Consolidated Industries and a well-known raeehorse owner. An astonishing feature of the bidding was that it started at 10.000 guineas, all in approximately 75 seconds. There were actually only live bids at the sale which was watelied by a erowd of 5000 and which was turned into a gala social event by the appearance of many fasliionably dressed women. One of these clashed with the attendant vvlio arrived just in time to prevent her feeding tlie champion a handful of salted peanuts. The well known, Melbourne owner, Mr. 0. Porter, who earlier in the week announced his intention of "going the limit" 011 Shannon, did not get" a chance to bid. The horse, which is a six-year-old, by Midstream from Idle Words, was examined hefore the start by experts and pronounced fit. He has had 21 starts for 12 wins and £16,444 10s in prize money.
