Bobby Calves The Souchiand Calf Pool cpmmittee has completed negqtiations for the sale of bobby calves in the coming season and the price receivr ed will allow for an advapce payment of 15s a head for all good calves and 6s a head for rejects, with the probability of a bonps of 10s a head on all good calves s'upplied to t]ie pool. This season's price is a record being 50 per cent. nigher than last year's price. A Grim Warning Erected over a building at the Bath Street-Oxford Street iptersection, a skull and crossbones flag will serve as a grim reminder to all road users of the need to exercise care. The flag is part of the road saf ety campaign at present -being carried out by the Junior Chambers of Commerce. It will be flown at half mast shpuld a fatal accident occur during the fortnight, during which the campaign is being' conducted. Abattoir Fees The fees at the- Levin Abattoirs for the month of July were £1060 4s 4d, as compared with £958 15s 9d in the same month cv" last year, said the manager, Mr. F. E. Lai - sen, in a report to Monday night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council. The stock slaughtered during the monUi was as follows, the figures for July, 1946, being given in parentheses: Cattle 650 (670) , sheep and iambs 5135 (3820) , pigs 342 (284) . Teachers and Smoking The board's by-law prohibiting teachers from smoking on school premises came under fire at • the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board yesterday when Mr. E. B. Lothian gave notice of motion to have the clause .vithdrawn. Mr. Lothian said the bylaw was' antiquated arid nointed out that it was dlffi.cult for teachers to be obliged to go outside every time they wi'shed to smoke, -particularly on wet days. The mdtter will be discussed at the next meeting of the board. Support for U.N.O. The need for wholehearted support of the United Nations Organisation by the people of Levin and district was again' emphasised by Mr. H. B. Burdekin, • when speaking at the monthiy meeting of the Levin Borough Council. He urged that all members of the council and citizens attend the meeting on Thursday night, at which the speaker would be Mr. Anton Vogt, the Dominion organiser for the setting up of branches of the United Nations Association in New Zealand. Building in Levin During the four months ended July 31 last the Levin Borough Council has issued 15 permits of a total value' of £24,843 for new private dwellings in Levin. "During July I carried out a routine inspection of every building in the coufse of construction in the "borough, the total bping just on 50," said the building inspeetor, Mr. H. F. Tilyard, in a report to this month's meeting of the Levin Borough Council. Breaches of the reguTations had been pointed out to certain builders, added Mr. Tilyard, and these had now been rectified. Record in Adop'ifcions More children were adopted in New Zdaland last year than in any previous year on repord. The number of adoptions was 1383, agaihst 1151 in 1945. "It is probable that improved economic cdnditions generally and press publicity givpn during recent years tp the legal adoption of children have had an influence on the position," says Mr. C. E. Peek, superihtendent '.6f the child welfare branch of the Education ^Department, in his annual report which was t'ahled in the House of Representatives yesterday. Last year's total was made up of 679 boys and 7Q4 girls. Of these 1131 were illegitjmate.
