VANDALISM AT TIP
Goncern at the indispriminate dumping pf rubbish near phe ri.,^bish dii'mp at Tifb Tirp Road "wgs e^pressed by the work^ cpmmittee of the Levin Borough Council in a report to tfi^ council on Monday night. There wa§ "cpp^id.prable evjdence of vandalism, said Cr. Gardner. Th© chp,in securing the, gate had beeh frequehtly sa'wh through and rubbish dumped just inside the- gate." " Considerable expense resuited in ha-ving such deposits pqshed intp the pit by bulldozers, tlie cost to the cbuheil fpr this work being £2 an hour for betwpen six ^nd severi hpurs work. ► Ip' it's report, the works committee' stated that several Iarge trees h§d* fecehfly been dumped tjiere by a cphtrgpto'r, It recompiended that a'sm^ll baph be erected on the prppprty and a p.epsioner instaileh there * to" supervise the depositing of rubbish ip. . the piy and ' repopt 'anyone damaging the prqperty or depositing unsiutable ruhbish ' there." Pertain peripds durT ing tHe wee'k cbuld be set aside for the depositing "of rpbblsh .and the key for the Tqcked gate left with the pensipher rather than at presT ent'at the borqugh o'ffice. ' It was suggested 'by Cr. POwell, that instead of continuing to use this pit, it be close.d and the ICent Street section • opened up' for the depositing of rubbish. This section, if it was to be used later as a R^rk, would have to he filled up, and the coupcil cbuld not keep'two going. It was pbint'ed out by Cr. Park.er, however, that in view of lts prqximity to the town, only rubbish of a suitable nature could be dumped there. The Mayor said that the suggestion pf the cpmmittee that a pensioner be employed ' to watch the Tiro Tiro Road tip would jhvolvp considerable expenditure, as even small buildings "were an expensive item'in view of present day costs. A.s he' coqld not be employed to look after the property op a fullr time basis, but would have only "a rent free bach, there would be no guarantee that' he would be there continually. In regard to the. control of the pit, it may mean that a new borough by-law "would" have to be drafted. Fqllowing further dis.cussion, it was decided that the matter be referred back to the cpmmittee for further recommendatiQn.
