PROVISION FOR EXPANSION
BOWLING CLUB'S REQUEST TO BOROUGH COUNCIL 'Its. desire to make provision for expansion in the future was expressed by the. Levin Central Bowling Ciub in a* letter to theLevin Borough Council at its .monthly meeting last night. With this in view, the club asked the council to consider arranging an exchange of the borough section in Bristol Street for the Police Department section in Essex Street, and then leasing the latter section to the club on the same lines as the present green. Commenting on the letter, Cr. D. J. Gardiner said " that; in company with Crs. W. Telford and'C. Sherwood, he had met representatives of the club at the green. They were very keen to extend their club and have sufficient roorn for a pavilion. They were also quite prepared to make up. any diiferences in price and pay any legal charges. ^ Also speaking in favour of the scheme, Crs. Telford and Sherwood , urged that the council support the suggestion. -Fpllowing discussion it was agreed that the council approve the scheme .in principal and indicate to the club that it would be pre- ^ pared to support it in its application.to the Justice Department-. It was 'made clear, however, that the initial negotiations with the department would have to be made bv the club.
New Reserve The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that it was now proposed to reserve the section at the corner of Queenwood Road and Bath Street,. a worked out -gravel pit, for recreational purposes, and vest the area in trie council in trust. Commenting, the Mayor suggested that this site could be used for recreational purposes. Cr. F. E. Parker; Acquatic sports? Mr. Burdekin: We could run gondolas on it. It was pointed out, during the discussion that followed that the pit occupied an area of about two acres, and could be eventually filted in an.d used as a park. Band Matters Permission to hold a band dis--play on the Levin Park Domain on J Saturday, November 15, was grant- ' ed the Horowhenua Scottish Society. The council also agreed to a request by the society for permission to charge an admission fee Qf ls 6d for" adults and 6d for children. 4 - • • A request from the Levin Boys' Band for permission to coriduct a I Sunday night concert in the Regent Theatre, on September 14, was also allowed. It was stated that this was the band's first public performance, and that the proceeds would go towards the repiacement of the projector at the Otaki Sanatorium. The council agreed that it was a worthy object, and they understood that the police had no objection. The Horowhenua Scottish Society and Pipe Band wrote seeking the payment of the gfant of £50 allowed for in the council's estimates. It was agreed by the council that payment be made accordingly . Miscellaneous Matters A letter from the Gas Association of New Zealand ' advised that its annual conference would be held in Wellington on Thursday, August 28. Cr. Parker was deputed to attend as the council's representative. Permission to hold a shop day on a Tuesday or Friday in February or March of next year was requested by the Levin Boy Scouts, the puri pose being to raise funds for equipIment. It was pointed out by the .Mayor that the Levin branch of the N.Z.R.S.A. had made "the first application for a day early "in the New Year, but as they had requested the attendance of the GovernorGeneral, no definite date had yet been fixed. He suggested that the scouts' application be approved, but that the date be held over till further advice was received in connec- • tion with the R.S.A. function. This suggestion was decided upon. Present at the meeting were: The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, and Crs. H. E. Bowen, A. O. Powell, V. E. Hudson, C. Sherwood, F. D. Chainey, W. Telford, F. E. Parker and D. J. Gardiner. Also Messrs. H.
