National Savings ' Shannon was successful aurmg last week in completing its annual National Savings quota. Out of the 24 towns in the Palmerston North district, Shannon was credited with being oue of the two best. The quota for Shannon was £510 16s. Painful Accident A very painful accident was suffered by Barry Johnson, son' of Mr. and Mrs. C. Johnson,. Grey Street, last Sunday morning. While playing with an axe he inflicted a severe cut in his foot. Medical aid was received and seven stitches inserted in the wound. The child is progressing favourably, although stiii receiving medical attention. | Ladies' Golf The weekly ladies' day at the Buckley Golf Club's links was held on Tuesday, when there was a good attendance of players. A siableford competition was held and Mrs. H. Pope was the winner. Last week. the local ladies' club met Levin and a drawn match resuited. Next Tuesday the local team will play Otaki. Inspection of Bicycles When Patrol Officers Silverwood and Keenan, of the Wellington Automobile Association, carried out an inspection of bicycles at the local school on Monday they found all to be in good condition. Patrol | Officer Silverwood stated that over 90 per cent. of the bicycles were up to the standard required by the Transport Department, having the necessary equipment of a bell, rear reflector, white rear mudguard strip and good brake. The standard achieved by the local school is higher than any other school visited by Pa.trol Officer Keenan, who said that the state of the bicycles is a credit to the children, their parentr, and the headmaster. The Shannon School is to be used as an example by these officers. Tt.S.A. Parcel Appeal Speaking at ihe general meeting of the Shannon Returned Services' Association on Saturday evening, the president, Mr. J. Ritchie, stated that the need for parcels to alleviate distress among British ex-service personnel who spent many years in the flghting zones in France, Italy, Africa and Germany is as urgert as ever. Mr. Ritchie said that the local branch has sent two lots of 44 parcels each and acknowledgments of the first parcels sent were now coming to hand. The first parcels were paid for out of R.S.A.1 'Ytm'dY and' ' thd second by public subscription. The branch is making an appeal to the public for assistancb to carry on this work.
