IN POSSESSION OF OPIUM
OTAKI CHINESE FINED £20 A fine of £20 was imposed on Ah Dorg, Chinese market gardenerj aged 50 years, of Otaki, by Mr. C. C. Marsack, S.M. in the Magistrate's Court yesterday after accused had pleaded guilty to a charge of being found in possession of prepared opium. Detective-Sergeant Alty told the court that as a result of information received from the Auckland police Ah Dong had been apprehended on the express from Aucklard at the Palmerston North railway station, and he then had one pound of prepared opium in his possession. Ah Dong had had no previous convictions.. Accused had made a statement to the police. This was not read in court but was handed to the Magistrate, who commented that it appeared that Ah Dong was a very sick man, not able to work and with no financial resources. He convicted Ah Dong and fired him £20, giving hm two months in which, to pay.
