BOROUGH ADMINISTRATION

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, and was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. R. E. Downes. Also present were Crs. R. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, W. C. Higgie and E. Perry. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. H. L. Norris and C. G. Wishart. Mr. V. J. Cottle, the newlyappomted representative on the Palmerston North Hospital Board, waited on the meeting and was introduced to the Mayor and councillors. Mr. Downes extended a welcome to Mr. Cottle and congratulated him on his appointment. Mr. Cottle stated that he was only too wllling to attend meetings of the council and discuss hospital board matters with councillors. A communication was received from a Stout Street resident complaini'ng of the sanitary collecting arrangements. To rhis the Mayor stated that the employee was not giving the service expected of him, and moved that the town clerk be directed to write him stating the work was required to be carried out on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and if he could not do it on the nights laid down he was to advise the town clerk. Also, the sanitary employee is to be noiified that if the council receives further complaints, enquiries will be made to have someone else take his place. The secretary of the entertainment commitiee of the Shannon Returned Services Association wrote extending an invitation to the Mayor and councillors to attend a social function on Thursday evening. The council accepted the invitation. Regarding. the hire of a tractor used in connection with the grading of the borough streets, a letter was received from the coniractor stating that it was not possible to reduce his price of 15s per hour, which he considered to be very reasonable. The acting-engineer of the Horowhenua Counoy Council, Mr. W. H. Fraser, replying to the council's letter, regarding the grading of the borough streets, said that in the meantime the position was such that his council could not undertake any additional work of this nature. On the motion of Cr. Aitchison it was resolved to write to a cOhtractor and " ascertain • the : charge for hire of his tracton The Commissioner of Transport advised the council of new amendments to the motor-drivers' regulations. The superintendent of the National Provident Fund served notice on the council that the Shannon Borough would be deemed to be a contributor to 'the fund as at July 31, 1947. During the discussion of matters of general importance in the borough, Cr. Lind reported that metal was required on some of the streets, and that this would be attended to. Cr. Roach reported that the repair work on the Municipal Building had been completed, but there was still some cleaning up to be done at the rear of the building. This was left in the hands of the building committee. Arrangements for the painting of notices for bridges and roads which are closed were left to Cr. Perry. Congratulations were exterded to the Mayor on his appointment, to the Land Saies Committee and on the motion of Cr. Lind, it was resolved that Mr. Downes be granted leave of absence when he was unable to attend meetings of

the council. The passing of accounts amounting to £75-19-2d, which included £16-10-4d insurance on the new fire engine, terminated the business of the meeting.
