HASTINGS, August 6. The development of a cultural centre, with additional* community facilities that will cater for needs of the people almost from tlie'cradle to old age as a. Hastings district war memorial, was approved at a public meeting in Hastings last evening. The proposals submitted provide for tlie acquisition of a bloek adjacent the Civic Square, and the combined development of these two bloeks. The cost of the war memorial project is estimated at £50,000, which would carry a £ for £ subsidy, so that the amount to be raised would be about £25,000. This would be in addition to the acquisition of the block of land by the borough and also the erection of additional buildings to provide civic and community facilities, the eost of which would be borne by the borough through the borough couneil. Two supplementary recommendations ajiproved by the meeting were: — (1) That a sum be set aside to provide prize money for an essav competition among high school pupils on the cause of war. (2) That a memorial tree be planted in Windsor Park for each man and woman who inade the supreme sacrilice.
