Heartless Fraud
Because he wanted to ensure the 'repayment by the prisoner of hioney secured from a Nelson girl by a "heartiess fraud" the Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O'Leary) in the Supreme Court, Wellington, admitted Thomas Herbert McKay, aged 31, a pastrycook, to probation for four years, a condition being that he repay £337 10s at the rate of 30s a week. Mr. L. A. Cresswell, who appeared for the prisoner, said the offences resulted from a breakun of the prisoner's marriage, his wife having gone off with another man. Af.er borrowing small sumS from the Nelson girl, to whom he became engaged while still mar« ried, the prisoner had got from her £100 and then another £200, saying that he Was going to buy a business.
