EQUALITY OF SACRIFICE CALLED FOR
Received Monday, 7 p.m. LONDON, August 4. A number of trade union leaders arc suggesting as a quid' pro quo for cou cessions iiulustry will be asked to make to meet the crisis, that the Government sliould not a'bandon its socialist programme, that pi'olits should be further restricted and release from the armed forces should be expedited,- says the Daily Telegraph. Both the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Express say the Government will call for an extensioh to other industries of the longer working hours already proposed for the iuiners. The Daily Express says Whitehall chiefs and trade union leaders feel that a longer day plan will not work unless the plan applies to all industries 011 the equality of sacrifice principle and not just on those in th'e e.xport industries or pits. Measures under consideration, according to the Daily Telegraph, 'include the restoration of the control of engagement order to prevent workers leaving their trades and an investigation into tlie employment of about 1,000,000 workers vvnose work is unidentifled.
