The previous nationaP-record was 3min 20.7 secs created by the Ohio State in 1946. Oflicials said Micliigan 's time would also be recognised as a world record sinee this is the first year the 300mptres medley relay had been admittea to world recognition. Bixteen-year-old Jimmy McLane to night broke the Olympic 400-metre free style svvimming record at the National Amateur Athletic Union men's outdoor svvijnming championships. McLane won by five yards from Bill •Smjth, in 4mm 41.9secs which, liovvever, failed to bet ter the American or world 's records Josepli Verdenr established a new Ame rican record for the 200-metre breaststroke with 2min 38.4sees which is 1.2 secs qjpf the world record.
