RUSSIAN WIVES OF BRITISH HUSBANDS TAXED
Received Friday, 7.30 p.m. LONDOX, August 1. Five British husbands whose Rus3ian wives the Soviet refused to allow to leave Russia, complain in a iettei to The Times that their wives recently received a taxation demand for 1 ' childlessness ' '. The tax, which is about £50 yearly, is levied on all child less R'ussians, married or single, over 23 years of age. "It is ironical that this tax should be lev.ied on those who, for reasons undisclosed by the Soviet, have beeu forced to live apart from their husbands for several years," the letter states. "Unless the tax is paid the wives will be liable to imprisonment oi at least may be denied employment in the British Embassy on the insistenee of the Soviet Foreign Office. "
