UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS

HOW LEVIN APPEARS TO A VISITOR Levin had unique characteristics and it was difficult to compare it with any other town in New Zealand. It was self contained and was just far enough away from a city to make it independent. It was changing rapidly . and getting very elose to rating as a main provincial town. These were the reflections of Mr. C. H. Andrews, an authority on modern display methods, when speaking on modern merchandisfng to members of the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce on Thurs-

day night. During the coprse of his address Mr. Andrews mentioned that this was the first occasion on which he had been tempted to stop a whole night in Levin. In the days when he ' frequently travelled up this .2oast and ha,d occasion to do business in Levin, he would stop in Palmerston North and work from there. He showed surprise v and pleasure at the obvious advancement of the town. From a trading point of view Levin was now a centre of its own*

It was catering for specialised people with their own particular needs and problems not eonnected wi.th any other town. He did not think that either Palmerston North or Wellington could cdmplete suecessfully with local tradesmen here, and it properly planned, Levin could be made a first class shopping centre.
