RAILWAY CHARGES UP IN NEW SOUTH WALES

The New South YYales Labour caucus .ins approved a recounncndation from .abinet that rail faies should be in•reasod 20 per ceiit and freight charges by from 15 to 40 pei eent. It is expccted that the new prices will operate within a fortnight. An attemp^ by the assistant treasurer, Mr. Clive Evatt, to persuade the i'artv to reject tlie recommendations provoked a clash with the Minister o! Transport, Mr. O'Sullivan. Cancus accepted the new charges by an over.vhelming majority. Mr. O'Sullivan said that a Bill would oe introduced to arneml the Transport v'oordination Act by extending to air iraveJ the taxatiori now imposed by the State on private motor operators who carried passengers and goods in cornpe- J tition with the raihvays. "The railvvays must be protected from eompetirion which would seriously jeopardise cheir linancial stability," he said. 'Passengers and freights should not be carried by air to the detriment of the. ailways. "
