- ♦ — ' — — LIFTING OF SUBSIDY AFFECTS IMPORTED TOBACCOS Consequent on the lifting of the Governmeht subsidy on imported tobacco, the retail prices of three popular brands have already been raised by 3d and in on'e c&se by 4d. This information was obtairied from a commercial traveller who passed through 'Levin yesterday. The increase will becoihe eifective on the arrival of the next shipm.ent. There is no incteaSe in the price of imported cigarettes as this commodity was not subsidised. Retailers in Levin state that the locally-manufactured tobacco is still severely rationed. Supplies are delivered here twice a month, but are soon disposed of. No reason fot the present dearth of tobacco could be obtained from the factories, said one retailer. The previous excuse was interference in production through the power cuts, he said, but he had not noticed any change since these cuts were discontinued.
