Reeeived Thiirsday, 9.30 a.m. LONDON, July 30. Professor M. L. Oliphant, the Birmingham University atom bomb expert, said: "It looks now as though we have reached the stage where defence is becoming impossible, and no nation going to war in future, however well armed, can avoid the consequences." Professor Oliphant indicated that these included, besides atomic weapons to destroy cities, fhe sprinkling of di'sease germs and also of subtle chemicals over the fields to destroy men, animals and crops, the distribution over cities of radioactive poisons to kill and maim and also pilotless planes and guided missiles of the rocket type.
