NEW EXCHANGE READY

FIRST CALL TO BE MADE BY MAYOR ON SATURDAY The new telephone exchange at the Levin Post Office is now completed and will operate as from Saturday. The official opening |ceremony has been sec for 2 p.m. and the Mayor of Levin, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, has been requested by the postmaster, Mr. L. A. Whitham, to put the first call through the new exchange. It is expected tha' the Chief Postmaster, Mr. M. R. Aldridge, and the telegraph engineer for the district, Mr. T. R. Hall, will be among the official guests. At the moment both exchanges are linked, but on Saturday the entire technical staff will be on hand to pull out a series of wooden pegs which will sever the old exchange from the new. This operation is only expected to take about five minutes. Besides the normal exchange staff, a special staff of operators will be on duty at the new board on Saturday to take contr'ol immediately the change over is effected, thus ensuring an uninterrupted service. Saturday afternoon has been chosen by the post office as it is less likely to be a busy ' period for the exchange. During the past two days the technicians have been engaged in testing local numbers in readiness for the switch over. Alterations to some subscribers' numbers will result from the employment of thjs new and larger exchange.
