LEVIN SUPPLIED THE CAR
"MONTY'S" PALMERSTON NORTH DRIVE When Field Marshal Lord Montgomery walked out of his hotel in Palmerston North on Saturday, he stepped into a car owned by Mr. t Peter Jack, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. r. Jack, of. Liverpool Street, Levin. The car, a super sports model, was made available by Mr. Jack so that the residents of Palmerston North could obtain a final view of the Field- Marshal as he drove to Milson Aerodrome to board the Lockheed Electra for . Hastings. As the official open car was required to meet the 'pla'ne in Hastings, it left Palmerston North on the Friday night. The anxiety of the civic authorities that every opportunity be given the public off -k .viewing the distinguished visitorsresulted in Mr. Jack being approached, as his vehicle was the only four-seater open car in the district.
Seen after its return from Palmerston North, the vehicle was still fitted with the silver standard bearer. On the windscreen was the official crown seal with the words G.R. No-. 1. He would have liked to retain the standard, said Mr. Jack, but that was not possible as it would be required during the remainder of the tour. Monty's official driver was greatly taken with the car, said Mr. * Jack, he being given an opporrunity to inspect it and familiarise himself Wiih it on the day before the drive. Travelling in the vehicle on Saturday morning were Viscount Montgomery, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, the Field Marshal's aide-de-camp and the official driver. The owner, Mr. Jack, followed in one of the official cars, taking possession of his own vehicle at Milson.
