-Press Association

Bv Telegraph

WELJjIN O-TON , July -Ai). In the spate of publicity that has accompanied the visit of Britain's famous soldier, Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery, the public has been told all about his tumultuous receptions, his appearance, his medals and even that he does not like pork, tish, eggs or bacon. What is not generally known is that the cares of the position of Chief of the Impenal General Staff still lie heavy on the shoulders of this diminutive and colourful hero. . . Not since the visits of Royalty has a visitor had such an overvrhelmmg reception, but when a tirect "Monty" has finished the round of omcial engagements he proceeds to handle the problems which have arrived during the day from London. Accompanying Lord Montgomery is Staff-Sergeant A. E. Wemborne, B.E.M., who is styled "personal clerk", but who is really a cyphers expert. Wherever "Monty" makes his headquarters, sheafs of cablegrams in code arrive during the day. It is the duty of Staff-Sergeant Wemborne to deciplier these. Lord Montgomery has stipulatect that he should have no engagements after 6 p.m., and the general view is that he retires to bed early. Those who have travelled with .him know cunerent. as soon as ne nas finished dinner, Lord Montgomery studies the day's cables, confers with his staff officer, Lieutenant-Colonel G. S. Cole, O.B.E., R.A., and sends his replies to London. During the three nights he was in Wellington, Lord Montgomery did not reach bed before 11 p.m.
