SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ANXIOUS."
Sir, — What is wrong with our seeondary schools? Do the pupils ever work in school hours? A good deal of their time seems to be spent in sport by both gii;ls and boys. At our local school there appears to be a football engagement every week with some other college, and likewise a basketball game. I11 the days gone by these were played on Saturday mornings without interfering with the week's studies. The stipulated time is 25 hours a week, but I doubt if 20 hours are put in by the majority of the scholars. Sport is an excellent thing in ifs place, but the tendency today appears to be sport first and work I a poor second. With the world in such a parlous state it behoves our educators to instil into the minds of their pupils that nothing worth1 while can be gained except by I earnest endeavour. I One thing that must appear 1 strange to outsiders with reference " to Horowhenua College is that i Levin is in the centre of a rich : farming district, yet no agriculture is being taught in the college and only a race of white-collar men and women are being turned out. Yours etc.,
Levin,, July 25.
