BOROUGH ADMINISTRATION
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening and presided over by the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) . Also present were Crs. J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, W. C. Higgie, E. Perry, C. G. Wishart and H. L. Norris. An apology for absence was received from Cr. R. R. Lind. Advice of fees charged for billiard rooms was received from the Levin, Foxton and. Otaki Boroughs and following a discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Aitchison, that a rebate of £5 in billiard saloon license fees be made to Mr. R. Vinsen for the 1947-48 period. On the motion of Cr. Wishart, it was agreed that lot 2, Vance Street, a property in the name of the Palmerston North Hospital Board acquired for the purpose of additions to the district nurse's cottage and consulting rooms, be exempt from rating. The District Engineer of the Public Works Department communicated with the council regarding the proposed erection of a ladies' rest room in Plimmer Terrace. The engineer advised that the matter has been referred to the Main Highways' .Board for consideration, and the council will be advised of the board's decision as soon as possible. In regard to the possible sealing of the ShannonMangaore main highway, the engineer asked if the council had made the necessary financial arrangements. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman of the works committee (Cr. Lind) and the town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) to fmalise. On the motion of Cr. Roach, the following building permits were granted: Mr. T. Christensen, Vance " Street, shed; Mr. E. J. S. Spencer, . Vogel Street, renovations to dwelling to the value of £650; Mr. R. S. Downes, Ballance Street, new dwelling to the value of £1300; Mr. G. E. Booker, Stout Street, new dwelling valued at £1300. Cr. J. A. Roach reported tliat repairs were being carried out- to the Municipal Buildings. Cr. Perry suggested that metal be placed at the domain entrance and the gateway near the pavilion. A suggestion was also made that a; ladies' convenience notice be erected at the domain.'
