DEFENCE RESEARCH

w LONDON, July 15. A lack of trained scientists is seriously delayiug the £20,000,000 Anglo-Aus-traliau projeet to develop long-range rockets and guided uiissiles for Imperial defence, says the Daily Express science writer. The slowness of the research is worrying the Chiefs of Staff who cannot plan $ long term defence programme until the possibilities of guided weapons for anti-aircraft and naval gunnery are tested. The authorities are urgently seeking scientists and engineers^for experimental work at the Australian desert rocket range but- the Government cannot get enough experts at the salaries offered. Of twelve jobs at the Australian range advertised on July 14, top salary — for a chief research officer to develop radar and radio rocket guiding devices — was £1076 yearly.
