TRAFFIC BREACHES

SITTING OF OTAKI COURT A sitting of the Otaki Magistrate's Court was held on Thursday, when the hearing of traffic breaches occupied most of the time. Messrs. H. Nicolson and H. B. Edhouse, J.P.'s., presided. Charges of exceeding the speed Iimit of 40 m.p.h. cost F. S. Hamiin and A. F. Thompson £2, with 10s costs, each. Inspector Davy stated that he had followed the defendants for about three miles and found their speed to be up to 58 m.p.h. Visibility at the time was poor. J. L. Jorgensen was charged with exceeding the regulation speed in a rsetricted area, and was fined £4, with 10s - costs. Inspector Davy told the court that he had followed defendant in the Paraparaumu area and saw him overtake other vehicles. At one time his speed was up to 50 m.p.h. When stopped defendant had no excuse. P. L. Hunt paid a penalty of £1, with 12s costs, for overtaking another vehicle on the incorrect side. It was stated that the breach took place at Otaki Railway. For defendant, Mr. B. H. Rhodes said he had committed the offencetto avoid an accident. A charge of exceeding the speed limit in a heavy motor vehicle was preferred against G. N. Gatchell. Inspector Doggett said defendant travelled at a speed of 45 m.p.h. at Paraparaumu, and had offered the excuse that he was in a hurry. A fine of £3, with 12s costs, was imposed. For having an excessive length of load R. N. Spiers, Ltd., were fined £2, with 10s costs. Inspector Davy said the length measured 14ft., whereas the regulations allowed only 9ft. 6ins. R. G. Morgan was fined £1, with 12s costs, for riding a motor-cycle without. a driver's licence. Inspector Davy said that defendant had only recently returned from Japan. Civil Cases Judgment by default was entered in the following civil cases: E. J. Cook (Mr. B. H. Rhodes) v. R. Kiriona .£6 10s,' costs '£1 18s 6d; T. V. Cahill (Mr. Rhodes) v. P. McGregor £5, costs £1 0s 6d; R. Wilkins v. R. Nimmo £11 3s 5d, costs £3 ls.
