Weather Fine ; Track Shows Improvement
(SPECIAL— FROM
WELLINGTON, July 11. The Wellington Racing Club will continue its winter meeting at Trentham tomorrow when another fine day can be expected. The weather has been fine all the week and the going will be in good winter order. The fields tomorrow will include severai fresh horses^ and as a result first day's form might not prove too reliable. The two main flat events, the Parliamentary and Members' Handicaps, and the Trial Plate had to be reduced to the safety margin through the balloting system. Although there will be a number of scratchings in pach of these events the fields will still, nevertheless, bp tricky, especially in the Pariamentary and Members' Handicaps.
Although he has gone up a stone for his success in the W elling uon Steeplechase on the first day, Good Armour won so well as to make him read another good prospect for ihe July Steeplechase. There are severai likely prospeets in the Parliamentary Handicap such as Valley Boy, Chung Chong, Foxchase, Robin's Reward, etc., but the "Chronicle's" choice is with the rising young handicap horse, Precedency, who is very fit for tomorrow's engagement. Favourites for the three main events are: — July Steeplechase: Good Armour, Royal Writ. Parliamentary Handicap: Robins Reward, Precedency. Members' Handicap : Play tos, Neenah. Betting will be win and. place. Fields Briefly Reviewed If started in the Corunna r±ack Hurdles Mary Lee would have been a strong public fancy, but she is to be reserved , for the Lambton Hurdles. Taking a line through Last Saturday's close second Selected must be hard to beat. Gifted with plenty of pace on the flat Corineus will only need to jump more confidently than last Saturday to hold a splendid chance. Deserb Trek should improve with last week's race as also should Duality and Ruling Moment. A fnesh form horse to be respected is Legal. A large field will parade for the Trial Plate in which best form is held by Playboy, Best Behaviour and Tranbycroft. This trio will carry the bulk of money. Others with prospeets are Horouta, Joe's Cobber, Mafcelona and Full of Fun. Sporting Gold is expected to improve on last week's fourth in the Lambton Hurdles. He is very well at present and has benefited from Saturday's race. Los.t Art and Khadim, two fresh horsesyare proficient hurdlers, especially Lost Art, who has a fine record in the south as a hurdler. Mary Lee, who will have the services of A. Midwood, will be one of the hardest to beat in the field and is likely to go out favourite. Foxstar has benefited from last week's race and is regarded at headquarters as a good prospect. Rink is coming back to his best. The race Morotai had last week should fit him better for the Seatoun Hack Handicap tomorrow. When he realised there was no hope of reaching the money Biily Brought.on did not knock Morotai abouc last week, and the horse looked fit and well on the track yesterday. Another solid race is expected from Tommy Gun. Copper Coin, who was a big disappointment in the concluding race, is expected to collect some stake money at the meeting. A fresh horse in Sir Warrior, who won so well at Hastings is to be respected as also is Neville. R,elampago was not seen in his true light last week. Special Flight will only require to be at her best to hold a winning chance, but she may need the race. Good Armour won the Wellington Steeplechase with such ease that the rise in weight in the July Steeplechase should not unduly worry him. No doubt Good Armour will be a ftrm favourite. Royal Writ, who outclassed the field in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, can be expected to make an auspicious debut in the open class field. Red Glare went well last week while his condition lasted, and he will appreciate the shorter journey. Abdicate is a horse to always keep on-side with on the latter days at Trentham. The Dozer is regarded in the far north as a bright prospect, but lately his jumping has not been too reliable. If the going is very heavy Moderate will appreciate it as also will Kilmanagh. Northfield disappointed last week, but might be seen to better advantage tomorrow. A good lightweight prospect is Roman Ned, whose second to Good Armour in the Wellington Steeplechase w7as a particularly good effort. The Parliamentary Handicap has drawn a large field, including sev- j eral fresh horses. Valley Boy was finishing on well in the Whyte Handicap and- the extra three furlongs will be to. his advantage. Fortune's Smile might find the journey beyond him, but Chung Chong, Foxchase, Robin's Reward, Honora, Joygiver, Tremello, Precedency and Flying Gold will all appreciate the longer journey. Tremello is very well and will be one of the favourites, but if Precedency gets anything like a good early run he will be very hard to beat. The same also applies to Chung Chong. The run Joygiver had in the Whyte Handicap has trimmed him up for tomorrow's race. If he takes it in his head»to give of his best Pensacola will make it interesting for the rest of the field. I-Ie is to be taken on trust.
If a surprise is in store it might come from Flying Gold. With a galaxy of good form already revealed, the Members1 • Handicap is the problem race on the card. Taking a line through the running of . the Stewards' Handicap last week Neenah must be hard to beat. Hot Pursuit ran an honest race in the Whyte Handicap to finish fourth and he also looks like having a say. in the issue, as also does Master Ted. Citation made her first appearance on ihe track yesterday since running second to Fortune's Smile in the Whyte Handicap, and galloped the smartest five of the morning, indicating that she holds good prospeets tomorrow. "Swift Fox looks very fit and is regarded in the north as a "good thing" for the Members' Handciap. He certainly looks the part. A fresh form horse in Playtos is coming into strong favour for the race. The best of the others might be Stony Broke, Po-Marama, Psalm, Prince Revel, Lady -Chips and Panope. Grand Tourist, who. ran a good second in the Stewards' Handicap, is reported to be sore and is a doubtfui starter. A fresh horse in Erin's Pal might prove to be the toughest to beat in the Petone Hack Handicap. Erin's Pal did not start last week but nothing is amiss with him. He looks very fit. Another fresh horse in Aristea looked particularly well when seen out on the track yesterday. Concrete was slow away last week, as also was Copper Coin, both losing whatever chance they had at the start. ■ Mr. Pym can be expected to race well again, while Sir Warrior will not be out of it. Mercian Lad, Eve:n Light and Lord Bradbury are not without at least place chances. Horses expected,. £ot race well tomorrow are*. . •Tr.tj.— dStuhna Tmpk Hurdles (lf miles) — Selected, Legal, Corineus. 11.42. — Trial Plate (6 furlongs) — Tranbycroft, Playboy, Best Behaviour. 12.25. — Lambton Hurdles (1? miles) — Mary Lee, Sporting Gold, Foxstar. 1.10. — Seatoun Hack Handicap =7 furlongs) — Morotai, Tommy Gun, Sir Warrior. 1.55. — July Steeplechase (about 3 miles)— Good Armour, Royal Writ, Roman Ned. . 2.41. — Parliamentary Handicap (11 furlongs) — Precedency, Tremello, Robin's Reward. 3.25. — Members' Handicap (7 , furlongs)— Playtos, Swift Fox, Citation. 4.10. — Petone Hack Handicap (1 mile)— Concrete, Mr. Pym, Copper Coin.
