MUST LEARN TO KNOW AND BE KNOWN.

Received Tluirsday, 7 p.m. LONDON, July 10. Emphasising that the ultimate climax of Lieutenant Mountbatten 's "new career" will be that of consort to the next sovereign of the British Empire, The Times ' in ,a leader, says that is a position of great difficulty, mueh delicacy and heavy j esponsibility. The relation between the Throne and the people is so subtle and ciianges so imperceptibly in these days of rapid soeial and constitutional development, that it is impossible to foresee exaetly what will be required of him when the time comes for him to assume the burden. To say more than that, the future Queen wiil have to look to him as her principal support and helper in every aspect of her life's work. Certainly his service will be different from that so devotedly rendered to Queen Victoria in the last century by Prince Albert and in some ways more important inasmueh,as since that time many functions essential to the unity of the Commonwealth for which political institutions formerly provided, have devolved upon the person of the sovereign. It will rest with the Princess and her husband to carry still further the development of the monarchy which has been so charaeteristic of this century, and their own eharaeter and actions will be determinining factors therein. In setting out, therefore, upon the adventure of their married life, these two ean never allow themselves to forget that they are preparing themselves to undertake some day, responsibilities far greater than fall to them in youth. They must learn above all to know and be known by the many peoples to whose service their lives are inescapable. To develop tha+ intimaey of understanding with all sorts and conditions of men, will henceforth be a joint enterpiuse, enriched and enriching others by the companionship in which it is undertaken. It will certainly require them to travel in many parts of the Empire.
